Mother of Exiles, a four-minute short by Owen Logan (COM'25), won Best Student Film at the New Media Film Festival in Los Angeles. The film sets a reading of Emma Lazarus's sonnet "The New Colossus" against scenes of immigrants arriving across U.S. history. Logan generated the visuals with AI video platforms, turning shot lists and blocking notes into prompts and refining them with language models. Diego Santiago (COM'25) edited the film, and a voice actor narrated it. Logan built it as an independent study with Associate Professor of the Practice Tunji Akinsehinwa, an option for COM film students.
