COM survey finds Americans underestimate opposition to AI data centers
MediaPolicySocial Science
A national survey from Boston University's College of Communication found that Americans underestimate opposition to AI data center construction within every political group. Ipsos fielded the poll for COM's Center for Media Innovation & Social Impact and Communication Research Center, reaching 1,005 U.S. residents on September 8–9, 2026. Overall, 51% opposed building data centers and about a quarter supported it. Respondents guessed that 21% of Republicans and 28% of Independents opposed construction, while the actual shares were 37% and 56%. Students can follow the ongoing Media & Technology Survey series for more findings on public attitudes toward AI.
